Coreslab: Four Years On

In early 2008, Spiroll supplied the equipment for a low budget start up to a South African company called Coreslab.

A construction company based in Polokwane, near Pretoria, Coreslab have expanded rapidly since their inception. Initially focussing on housing, word started to spread about their cost saving technology and they found themselves expanding into new markets, including office buildings, reservoirs, showrooms, shopping centres and a number of governmental projects.

The factory start up used plant purchased locally together with extruders, saws, design software and other equipment from Spiroll. Most crucial to ensuring a smooth start however, was the strong technical backup provided by Spiroll in the form of designs, data, specifications, training and spare parts.

Coreslab started with two 120 metre long beds, single strand tensioning and equipment for soft-de-tensioning. The cranes and batching plant were second hand which helped to reduce the pay back times significantly. Now, four years after their start up, they have four beds, beam moulds, column moulds, a fleet of vehicles and cranes, and a shift system to allow them to fill four beds every day.

Perhaps the most impressive and talked about use of Coreslab’s products has been for water reservoirs. The water tank projects use hollowcore for the roofs supported by precast columns and beams. By utilising the lighter weight and longer spans achievable with prestressing techniques they have reduced build times by two thirds and costs by 40%.

During a visit by Spiroll, Director Tian De Jaeger said without hesitation that in his opinion the Spiroll extruder was the most suitable of its kind for the African market. He has researched the machinery market over a number of years and indicated that the Spiroll Extruder was “simple to run and maintain, and consistently produced a slab superior in strength and quality.”

Coreslab have proven that the Spiroll system can be operated in a challenging environment and have succeeded where other hollowcore investment has failed. There are still a number of regions and markets globally in which hollowcore has yet to become established, but the progress of Coreslab demonstrates that Spiroll have all the necessary expertise to ensure the success of customers in these markets.
