Bespoke Multi-Stressing Solution at Bison

Bison Manufacturing at Uddingston, just outside of Glasgow, contacted Spiroll as they were looking at ways to make their hollowcore production procedure more efficient. After further consultation it was decided that a portable multi-stressing system would provide just the kind of improvement they were looking for.

Multi-stressing systems prevent any shock to the precast concrete product during detensioning. They are also much quicker, safer and less labour intensive than a single jack stressing and detensioning operation. Spiroll multi-stressing systems come complete with a handling frame, enabling the hydraulic cylinders to be picked up and moved from bed to bed using a forklift truck or overhead crane. This provides a significant saving when compared to fixed systems that utilise a pair of cylinders for each bed.

The previous rig that the new system replaced was housed underground. As well as pulling mechanisms, it had 4 lift cylinders that operated a pantograph, and cross travel wheels and motors to move between bed locations. These workings were situated within a damp and dirty environment which necessitated daily maintenance.

The design of the new Bison multi-stressing rig gives it a maximum capacity of 200 tonnes, main cylinder stroke of 1200 mm and a speed of 600 mm per minute when stressing. Control of the unit is via remote control pendant, and it can be moved from bed to bed via single point attachment directly to the crane hook.

Jim Harley, Operations Manager at the Uddingston plant, said ” The design and engineering behind the new multi-stressing system has meant that, in terms of maintenance and labour, we have seen a huge improvement in efficiency and cost reduction. For the maintenance team, working underground in a harsh environment was not ideal, so we are also seeing the obvious helath and safety benefits from eliminating this confined working space.”

The investment in the multi-stressing system has contributed to the Uddingston plant being designated as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for bespoke precast products. More information abouot the modernisation of the Uddingston plant can be found here.

As well as exporting machinery around the World, Spiroll are always happy to help support the UK precast concrete industry wherever possible. This includes precast machinery, prestressing equipment, technology and training. Contact us if you would like to know how a multi-stressing system could improve your production process.
