Help for Haiti – Spiroll launch fund for ‘Fast Housing’ scheme
Following the tragic earthquake which devastated Haiti in January Spiroll has launched an appeal to help fund the urgent need to house the country’s homeless. The firm’s accountants have set up the fund ‘Fast Housing for Haiti’ which has been granted charity status. The appeal goes out to Spiroll customers and suppliers as well as the construction industry in general.
Spiroll has strong associations with Haiti and, at the end of last year, helped build a factory in the capital Port-au-Prince. Its customer, Allprecast, started producing the precast hollowcore slabs just 2 hours before the earthquake struck. The factory survived the quake but Allprecast now needs more machinery to produce the massive, unscheduled demand for precast products.

Stephen Carr, Managing Director of Spiroll, visited Haiti in March to assess the situation and establish priorities in terms of plant requirement and training. Working with an independent executive committee, he now hopes to raise £100,000 for the fund.

Mr. Carr said: “When news of the quake broke we realised this was an extremely serious situation and were worried for all those at the factory.” Just 24 hours after the quake, Mr. Carr received an e-mail from Philippe Lauture, of Allprecast, which said the factory had survived. Mr. Lauture e-mailed later, saying: “Due to the massive destruction and the need to rebuild rapidly, we need more equipment to produce hollowcore.”

The Haitian company do not have the capital to meet the investment required to satisfy the incredible demand for increased production facilities. Mr. Carr is hoping that individuals and businesses will rally round and help pay for equipment and training.
He said: “The production capacity of the hollowcore factory in Port-au-Prince must be increased along with a facility specifically for precast housing needs.
You and your company can help to house the homeless in Haiti by making a donation to our special fund ‘Fast Housing for Haiti’ which has been granted charity status. You can make a donation at any time by visiting www.justgiving.com/fasthousingforhaiti.
Alternatively, contributions can be made directly to the fund’s account which has been set up with the NatWest bank. Cheques made payable to ‘Fast Housing For Haiti’ can be sent to Spiroll Precast Services Ltd., Unit 2 Kingsway Industrial Park, Derby, DE22 3FP, United Kingdom.

The rebuilding of Haiti will take years but the priority must be placed on providing for the thousands of homeless men, women and children. This fund will provide immediate help direct to fully accountable organisations who hold the key to the re-building programme.
Every contribution will help, however small. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
