Hollowcore Hotting Up In India

A continuous campaign to support the establishment of hollowcore in India has resulted in Spiroll securing its first Indian contract. Spiroll’s efforts came to fruition after Stephen Carr and Richard Jamison visited India in February this year for the Cemcon seminar in Pune.

In its fifteenth year, the seminar entitled ‘Redefining Mass Housing and Infrastructure in India’ was the first of its kind to focus on the country’s building needs. The event, which was jointly organised by the ICI (Indian Concrete Industry) and Cemcon, attracted companies from all over the world and proved to be an excellent showcase of precast companies as well as a demonstration of the knowledge that already exists in the country.

Stephen Carr said: “It was evident from the number of high profile companies present that precast has a real future in India.”

This focus of knowledge and a personal drive from key figures has lead to the formation of a technical committee and the establishment of a precast association in India.

The first association meeting was held during the seminar with representatives from local precast manufacturers, precast designers, developers and several of the manufacturers of hollowcore equipment.

In an unprecedented move, the attending hollowcore machinery manufacturers agreed to work in co-operation with each other. They pledged to provide full support to the new precast association and to help educate developers, contractors and end users of precast in India.

Commenting further on the development, Stephen Carr added: “With several hollowcore plants either in operation or in the installation phase the Indian market is steadily developing.

“Spiroll has been making regular visits to the country for over two years and we have seen a real change in attitude towards hollowcore.

“The need for rapid construction in India lends itself well to precast and, with improved quality along with a reduction in the use of materials, there are real benefits to be had.

“With Spiroll’s focus on providing its customers with the ability to manufacture the best quality hollowcore at the lowest possible price we feel that our precast solution can compete with traditional reinforced concrete where speed and quality are also required.”

Under the new contract Spiroll will be working with its new customer, Parijatha Floorings, in Bangalore to establish a start up plant that will allow a fast return on investment. The factory will initially be designed in a way that can support progressive growth in the future. The shed is already well under construction and the plant should be operational in August 2010.
