Partnership Promises Affordable Housing
A partnership between two of the world’s longest established players in the precast concrete products industry is set to tackle the global need for low cost, affordable housing.
Spiroll Precast Services and the Pakistan-based Izhar Group have signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ (MOU) to jointly pioneer an initiative designed to provide fast-track affordable housing worldwide.

The directors of both companies recognised the ongoing need for low-cost accommodation in the poorer, third-world countries of Africa, Asia, and South America.
The two companies have a long established business relationship and Spiroll is currently manufacturing hollowcore production lines for Izhar’s Karachi plant.

The Pakistani company was established in 1959 by the late Izhar Ahmad Qureshi who passed away in 2004. Mr. Qureshi was an eminent engineer and pioneer of prestressed products in Pakistan and his company soon gained a reputation for innovative engineering and construction operations throughout his native country.
The legacy left by Mr. Qureshi has seen the Izhar Group develop into a multifaceted organisation which successfully produces a wide variety of high quality precast, prestressed, structural concrete products. Omer Ayub Izhar, Director of Projects for the Izhar Group and the founder’s grandson, explained: “Our MOU with Spiroll will ensure continued development of various techniques in precasting by generating best synergy out of our individual expertise.
“The first step of our low cost, affordable housing project is well underway with new production lines for the manufacture of hollowcore slabs being built for our facility in Karachi. “We anticipate that this new dimension in construction will provide the facility to build affordable housing without compromising on architectural beauty, quality of works and the safety of the prospective residents.”

Commenting further on the safety aspects of the new low cost housing, Omer Ayub Izhar added: “The new precast building systems are far more durable and environmentally friendly than conventional brick and in-situ concrete construction methods, allowing us to embark upon cost effective, mass production of precast units.”
Mr Izhar summed up the benefit of the partnership by saying: “There is an African proverb which states: When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.”
